The V&A is one of the world’s famous museum of art, design and performance. Founded in 1852 to make works of art available to all, today the V&A houses a permanent collection of over 2 million objects.

We have worked with the London museum to discover beautiful designs from their archive to create these stunning kimono designs, Ume Sakura.

This elegant pattern is based on a magnificent furisode (swinging sleeves) kimono in the V&A collection.

The design of the original reveals the dynamism of Japanese textile design in the early 20th century. A traditional motif of bamboo, plum blossoms and clouds has been dramatically enlarged, the bold design reflecting the confident spirit of the period. The auspicious motifs suggest the robe may have been worn for a very special occasion.

The Art of Tapestry

Tapestry is an ancient art dating back over 2000 years. In the UK and Europe, tapestry art was most prominent during the middle-ages. Barons and knights would adorn their castle walls with them for both decoration and warmth. A tapestry is started by stretching plain warp threads on a loom to create a grid. The coloured weft threads are then weaved in and out of the warp threads, building up a complete tapestry. Our production method uses modern mechanical looms which greatly speeds up what used to take weeks or months by hand.

A special characteristic of each Signare bag is that each one is unique. Signare means ‘Signature’ in Latin and we wish every customer to possess their own individual signature bag.
