Product Description
Jane Austen was born in Hampshire in 1775 and spent much of her life in the historic and beautiful county. Austen mingled with local society and enjoyed dances and visits in great houses throughout Hampshire which provided the inspiration for many of her novels.
The last eight years of Jane’s life were spent in a modest house in Chawton where she wrote her major works: Sense and Sensibility,Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion. In May 1817 Jane became ill and moved to Winchester to seek medical treatment but died there on 18thJuly. She is buried in Winchester Cathedral.
These designs draw on the repeating pattern of oak leaves from a Pelisse Coat thought to have belonged to Jane Austen (a Pelisse coat was a garment worn over a dress or gown which was fashionable during Austen’s lifetime). The oak leaf motif used here was a popular national symbol in Britain at a time

The Art of Tapestry
Tapestry is an ancient art dating back over 2000 years. In the UK and Europe, tapestry art was most prominent during the middle-ages. Barons and knights would adorn their castle walls with them for both decoration and warmth. A tapestry is started by stretching plain warp threads on a loom to create a grid. The coloured weft threads are then weaved in and out of the warp threads, building up a complete tapestry. Our production method uses modern mechanical looms which greatly speeds up what used to take weeks or months by hand.
A special characteristic of each Signare bag is that each one is unique. Signare means ‘Signature’ in Latin and we wish every customer to possess their own individual signature bag.

The oak leaf motif used here was a popular national symbol in Britain at a time.
